What is Sudden displacement of water?

Sudden displacement of water is when a lot of water moves quickly from one place to another, like when you jump into a puddle and it all squishes out!

Imagine you're sitting in a bathtub full of water. Now, if you suddenly stand up and jump out, the water that was holding your weight has to go somewhere fast. That’s sudden displacement, the water moves quickly because something big happened all at once.

This is what happens with waves or even tsunamis! When a big rock falls into a lake or the ground shakes under the ocean, it pushes a lot of water up and out. That’s like when you drop a brick into a pool, the water jumps up and then flows outward in all directions.
