What is subject?

A subject is what you’re talking about or thinking about when you're telling a story or explaining something.

Imagine you have a favorite toy box, it’s full of cars, blocks, and dolls. If you say, “The red car went fast,” the subject is the red car because that’s what you’re focusing on in your sentence. It's like pointing to the toy with your finger and saying, "Look at this one!"

When you're telling a story or making a sentence, the subject is who or what is doing the action.

• If you say, “I drew a picture,” the subject is you, because you’re the one doing the drawing.
• If you say, “The cat sat on the mat,” the subject is the cat, because that’s who did the sitting.

Think of it like playing tag, the person running is the one doing the action. That person is your subject in the game of tag!
