Subcategorization is when words have special groups they can hang out with, like best friends.
Imagine you're playing with building blocks. Each block is a word, and some blocks only fit with certain other blocks, those are their friends or subcategories.
Like a Block Party
Let’s say the word “eat” is a block that loves to be with food blocks, like “apple”, “cake”, or “ice cream.” So you might build sentences like:
- “I eat an apple.”
- “She eats a cake.”
But “eat” doesn’t usually hang out with non-food blocks, it’s not common to say, “I eat a chair,” unless it’s a very silly chair.
Now imagine the word “run”, it might have its own friends like “fast”, “away”, or “in the park.”
So subcategorization is like knowing which blocks (or words) go best with each other in your sentence-building games. It helps make sentences feel just right!
