What is Spanish?

Spanish is a language that people use to talk and write, just like you use English every day.

Imagine you have a favorite toy, maybe it’s a red ball or a green dinosaur. Now imagine your friend has the same toy but lives far away. If you want to tell them about your toy, you might say, “Look at my red ball!” But if they speak Spanish, they might say, “¡Mira mi bola roja!” That’s the same idea, just said in a different way.

How Spanish Works

Spanish is like having another set of words and rules to use when talking or writing. Just as you learn how to spell your name and count to ten in English, people who speak Spanish learn those things too, but with different words.

For example:

  • "Hello" in English is "hello," but in Spanish it’s "hola."
  • "Thank you" is "thank you" in English, but in Spanish it’s "gracias."

It's like having a secret code that lets you talk to people from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and many other countries, all using the same language, Spanish.
