Social status within the enslaved community is like having different roles in a big game everyone plays together.
Imagine you’re in a classroom where all the kids are playing a game called “Be the Teacher.” Some kids get to be the teacher, others help the teacher by passing out papers, and some just sit quietly watching. In the enslaved community, social status was like being the teacher, it meant having more respect, better jobs, or even smaller chores.
How People Got Higher Status
Some enslaved people had higher social status because they worked close to their enslaver’s family, like a cook or a nurse. It was like being the best friend of the class leader, you got special treatment sometimes! Others became leaders in secret groups, helping other enslaved people escape, which made them very respected.
Status Could Change
Just like how someone might switch from being the teacher to passing out papers if they make a mistake, social status could change. If someone was kind or brave, others might look up to them more, and that meant their status went up!
