What is slavery?

Slavery is when one person owns another person, like they're a toy that can be moved wherever the owner wants.

Imagine you have your favorite teddy bear, and someone else says, "You can't play with it anymore, I own it now." That’s kind of what slavery feels like for people. They’re not free to choose where they live or work; their owner decides everything.

What Slavery Looks Like

In slavery, the person who is enslaved might be made to do hard work all day, like cleaning, farming, or building things, without getting much in return. It’s like if you had to clean your whole house every day, but never got any snacks or toys as a reward.

Sometimes, slaves were even taken far away from their families, just like how your lunchbox might be moved to another kid’s desk at school, and you don’t get to see it again for a long time.

Slavery wasn't always the same everywhere, but it was about taking people's freedom, and that made life really hard for them.
