A sign is something that stands for or means another thing, and the interpretant is what it makes you think of, like a secret message from one part of your brain to another.
Like a Puzzle Piece
Imagine you're playing with puzzle pieces. A red square is a sign, and when you look at it, your brain thinks, "Oh! This goes next to the blue triangle!" That thought, that idea, is the interpretant. So the sign is like the puzzle piece you see, and the interpretant is the thought that helps you fit it in.
Like a Special Word
Now think of a word you know well, say, "cookie." The word "cookie" is the sign, and when you hear it, your brain goes yum and pictures a soft, sweet treat. That picture or feeling is the interpretant. It's like your brain is whispering to you: "I know what this means!"
So every time you see a sign, your brain sends an interpretant, a little message that helps you understand what's going on!
Examples
