Shedding is when something loses its old cover to show off a new one underneath.
Imagine you have a favorite coat that you wear all winter long. It gets dirty and worn out from being on you every day. One day, you take it off, and you notice your skin looks different, maybe smoother or brighter. That’s like shedding!
What happens during shedding
When something sheds, it's like taking off a fuzzy blanket that has been covering it for a while. Underneath is a fresh, new layer.
Think of a cat, when it loses its old fur and grows new fur, that’s shedding too! Just like you changing your coat from winter to summer, the cat changes its coat from one season to another.
Shedding can happen with people, animals, even plants. It's all about saying goodbye to something old and hello to something new, just like when you get a fresh pair of socks after wearing the same ones for weeks!
Examples
- A child peels off a dead layer of skin from their elbow, revealing fresh pink skin underneath.
- Your feet feel rough after a long walk because the top layer of your skin is shedding.
