Self-disclosure is when you share something personal about yourself with someone else.
Imagine you're playing with your best friend, and you have a toy that's really special to you, maybe it’s your favorite dinosaur. You might say, "This dinosaur is my favorite because it came from my grandma." That's self-disclosure! You shared something about you that wasn't known before.
Like Sharing Your Treasure
Think of self-disclosure like opening a treasure box. At first, the box is closed, no one knows what’s inside. But when you open it and show your favorite toy to your friend, that's like sharing your thoughts or feelings with someone else. It makes the friendship stronger because now your friend knows something special about you.
Sometimes, people share little things, like their favorite color or a funny joke they heard at school. Other times, they might tell bigger secrets, like what they want to be when they grow up. Every time you open that treasure box, you're building trust and closeness with the person listening.
