What is self-construal?

Self-construal is how you see yourself in relation to other people, like your superhero team in a big adventure.

Imagine you're playing with friends at the park. Some kids think of themselves as the leader who gives everyone instructions, while others think of themselves as the helper who makes sure everyone has fun. That’s what self-construal is, it's how you see your role in a group.

Like Being Part of a Team

If you're the kind of kid who likes to be in charge and make decisions, you might have an independent self-construal, like being the captain of your team. You think about what you want and how you can do things.

But if you love helping others and enjoy working together, you might have an interdependent self-construal, like being part of a group where everyone helps each other out. You think about what we can do together.

You might switch between these views depending on the situation, just like how you might be the leader at one game and the helper at another. It’s all about how you see your place in the world, whether you’re more of a solo hero or a team player!
