A second is the smallest piece of time we usually count when we're telling how long something takes.
Imagine you're playing a game of jump rope, every time the rope goes up and down, that's one jump. Now imagine your friend jumps really fast, so fast that they do about 60 jumps in just one minute. That means each jump takes about one second! A second is like one of those quick little jumps.
How we measure seconds
We use a clock to count seconds, the big hand on the clock moves around the numbers, and every time it ticks from one number to the next, that’s about 5 seconds. But if you watch closely, there are tiny marks in between the numbers, and each of those marks is one second.
Why we need seconds
We use seconds because they help us know how long things take, like when you're timing how fast you can run to the park or how long it takes for your favorite song to play. It's like having a tiny timer in your head that goes tick, tick, tick, and each tick is one second!
