What is satoshi?

A satoshi is the smallest piece of bitcoin, like a grain of sand in a big sandbox.

Imagine you have a piggy bank full of coins, each coin is worth 100 smaller pieces, like cents. A satoshi is like one of those tiny pieces, the tiniest part of bitcoin.

Like Sharing Candy

If you and your friend are sharing candy, and you want to split just one piece between you both, that’s like having a satoshi each. It's not much, but it’s real!

Big Numbers, Tiny Pieces

A full bitcoin is like a big chocolate bar, 100 million satoshis in total. So if someone sends you just 1 satoshi, it's like getting one teeny-tiny piece of that chocolate.

You can have bitcoins, or you can have satoshis, and both are real, just like how you can count your coins or count your cents.
