What is salt?

Salt is a special kind of crystal that makes food taste better and helps things stay fresh.

Imagine you have a bag of tiny, white squares, these are salt crystals, just like the ones you sprinkle on your popcorn or your fries. Salt comes from saltwater (like the ocean), and when the water evaporates, it leaves behind these little squares.

How salt is made

Salt is created by letting water dry up. If you have a puddle of salty water and let the sun shine on it all day, the water will turn into vapor, and what’s left behind is solid salt, like when your socks get really dry after being in the washing machine.

Why we use salt

Salt helps food taste more interesting by adding a flavor boost, and it also keeps things from going bad. Think of it as a super helper that makes our meals better and lasts longer. You can even find salt in your kitchen, maybe you’ve seen it on the table or in the cabinet next to the sugar!
