What is rigid?

Rigid means something doesn’t bend or change easily, it stays stiff and strong.

Imagine you have a toothpick and a piece of playdough. If you try to push them together, the toothpick won’t squish or move much, that’s because it's rigid. The playdough, on the other hand, gets all wobbly and changes shape, it’s not rigid.

Think about a chair. If you sit on it, the legs don’t bend, they stay straight. That’s because the chair is made of materials that are rigid, like wood or metal. But if the chair was made of clay, it might squish under your weight.

If something isn’t rigid, we say it's flexible or soft. Like a balloon, you can squeeze it and stretch it all day long. But a brick? Not so much. It stays the same shape no matter what you do to it.
