What is quantization?

Quantization is when we turn smooth, endless numbers into step-by-step numbers that are easier to work with.

Imagine you're coloring a picture with crayons. If you use just 2 colors, say, red and blue, your picture looks like it has only two shades, not the full rainbow of possibilities. That’s like quantization: we’re using fewer options instead of all possible ones.

Like Coloring With Crayons

If you have a big box of crayons with 64 colors, you can make very detailed pictures, that's like having a lot of numbers to choose from. But if you only have 8 crayons, your picture has bigger steps between the colors, and that’s like quantization in action.

Why We Do It

Sometimes, we want things to be simpler or faster. Like when you're listening to music on your phone. If the phone uses fewer numbers to describe each sound, it takes up less space and works more quickly, but the music might not sound as rich. That’s quantization helping make things easier, just like using fewer crayons makes drawing faster, even if it's a little simpler.
