What is pseudorange?

A pseudorange is like a guess at how far away something is, not exactly right, but close enough to help you figure things out.

Imagine you're playing hide and seek with your friend in a big park. You shout, "I see you!" But you don't know exactly where they are. So you count how many seconds it takes for their reply to reach you. Since sound travels at a steady speed, that time lets you guess how far away they are, even if it’s not perfect.

That’s like a pseudorange. In GPS, satellites send out signals, and your phone counts how long it takes for the signal to arrive. It uses that time to guess the distance between your phone and the satellite, that guess is the pseudorange.

Why it's not perfect

Your phone doesn’t know exactly when the satellite sent its signal, so the guess might be a little off, like if you start counting seconds after your friend already said “I see you!” But with more guesses from other satellites, your phone can fix the mistake and find out where you really are. Examples

  1. Imagine a child trying to figure out how far away the park is by counting how long it takes for a friend's shout to reach them.
  2. A car's GPS sometimes shows you're slightly off course because it thinks the signal took longer than it actually did.
  3. A watch uses the time it takes for signals from satellites to arrive to guess your location.
