Prosody is how we use rhythm and flow to make speech sound natural and expressive.
Imagine you're reading a bedtime story to your little brother. You don't just say each word one after the other, you change how fast or slow you talk, when you pause, and even how high or low your voice goes. That’s prosody in action! It helps make the story fun and easy to follow.
How it works
Rhythm is like a heartbeat for speech. If you say “I went to the park” all in one go, it might sound boring. But if you take pauses between words, “I went / to the / park”, it becomes more interesting, just like music has beats.
Intonation is how your voice goes up and down. When you’re happy, your voice might go up at the end of a sentence, like “You came?!” If you're surprised, that’s prosody helping tell a story with your voice!
So next time you talk to someone, think about how you use rhythm and intonation, it's prosody making your speech sound just right!
