What is Proprioception?

Proprioception is your body’s superpower for knowing where you are without looking.

Imagine you're playing hide and seek, and you close your eyes. You still know where your hands are, even if you can’t see them, that's proprioception in action! It’s like having tiny sensors inside your muscles and joints that tell your brain, “I’m stretched out,” or “I’m bent here.”

How it works

Think of your body like a robot. Every time you move, whether you're walking, jumping, or just reaching for a cookie, special sensors in your muscles and joints send messages to your brain. These messages are like little notes saying, “I’m moving up!” or “I’m bending down!” Your brain gets all these notes and knows exactly where every part of you is, even if you can’t see it.

Why it’s cool

Without proprioception, you’d be like a robot that doesn't know where its arms are, it might try to grab a cookie and end up grabbing your own face! But with it, you can run, dance, and even sleep without thinking about it. It's your body’s secret helper, working all the time so you don’t have to.
