Pitch is how high or low a sound seems to be.
Imagine you're playing with a toy piano, when you press the highest key, it makes a super high ping, like a bird chirping. When you press the lowest key, it makes a deep, rumbling thud, like a drum. That’s what pitch is: how high or low a sound feels.
How We Hear Pitch
Your ears work like little detective tools. When something vibrates fast, like a tiny rubber band being snapped quickly, your ear hears it as a high pitch, just like that bird chirp!
When something vibrates slow, like a big slinky being pulled slowly up and down, your ear hears it as a low pitch, more like that deep drum sound.
Why Pitch Matters
Think of your favorite song. If all the notes were the same height, it would be boring! But when they go high and low, it makes music fun to listen to, just like how going up and down on a swing is more exciting than staying still.
Examples
- A child learns that a high-pitched whistle sounds like a bird, while a low-pitched drum mimics a thunderclap.
- A musician uses a tuning fork to adjust their guitar strings.
