What is pharynx?

The pharynx is like a special tunnel inside your body that helps you eat and talk.

Imagine you're eating a big bite of pizza. You chew it with your teeth, but to get it all the way down to your stomach, it needs help. That's where the pharynx comes in, it's like a stretchy hallway behind your nose and mouth. When you swallow, food goes from your mouth into this tunnel, and then it travels down to your throat.

How It Works with Your Tongue

Think of your tongue as a helpful friend who pushes the pizza (or whatever you're eating) toward the pharynx. Once it's in there, the muscles in your neck help move it along like a slide, all the way to your stomach!

When you're talking, the pharynx also helps make sounds by letting air pass through it. So whether you're saying "hello" or eating ice cream, your pharynx is working hard behind the scenes!
