A percentage is a way to show how much of something you have compared to 100 parts.
Imagine you have a big chocolate bar divided into 100 tiny squares, that’s like having 100 pieces. If you eat 25 of them, you’ve eaten 25% of the whole bar. That means for every 100 squares, you took 25 of them!
Chocolate and Sharing
Let’s say your friend has a bag of 100 marbles, and they give you 40 of them. You now have 40% of the marbles, that’s like having a big chunk of their collection. If you had all 100 marbles, that would be 100%, which means you have everything!
Percentage in Real Life
You might see percentages on your favorite cereal box: “25% more crunch!” That means if there were usually 4 pieces of cereal in a serving, now there are 5, just like eating one extra square of chocolate!
Percentages help us understand parts of a whole, whether it’s marbles, chocolate, or even how much time you spend playing video games versus doing homework.
