What is pacing?

Pacing is how fast or slow something happens in a story or activity.

Imagine you're playing on a swing. If you pump your legs fast, you go high and quick. If you do it slowly, you rise gently and take more time to come back down. That’s like pacing, it’s the speed at which things move forward.

Like a Race

Think of pacing like a race. Some people run fast right away, like sprinters who go all out from the start. Others start slowly, like runners who build up their speed as they go. In stories, pacing helps us feel excited or calm, just like how you feel when you're zooming on your swing or taking it easy.

Pacing in Stories

When a story has fast pacing, things happen quickly, like a big storm coming fast. When the pacing is slow, we get to know characters and think about what’s happening, like watching leaves fall slowly from a tree.
