What is Oxygen-15?

Oxygen-15 is like a special version of the oxygen we breathe every day.

Imagine you have a bag full of marbles, all of them are blue and look exactly the same. But some of those marbles are slightly different inside, even though they still look the same from the outside. That’s what Oxygen-15 is like, it's a type of oxygen that has a few extra bits in its structure.

Normally, oxygen has 8 protons and 8 neutrons in its nucleus (the center part of an atom). But Oxygen-15 has one fewer neutron, just 7, so it’s lighter than regular oxygen. This makes it behave a little differently when scientists use it to study things like blood flow or how the body works.

How It's Used

Scientists sometimes put Oxygen-15 into the body, and then they watch where it goes using special tools. It's like giving someone a glowing marble to see where it moves, only instead of marbles, it’s oxygen, and instead of watching them move, scientists can learn about how our bodies work.

It’s not magic, it’s just science with a little twist!
