How Opium Works
Opium comes from a plant called the opium poppy. Farmers grow these plants, and then they collect a sticky substance from the seeds. This is opium.
When people take opium, it goes into their body and starts working on special parts of the brain that control how we feel pain and happiness. It's like giving your brain a soft hug, it makes everything feel better and more comfortable.
Why People Use Opium
Some people use opium to help them sleep better or to feel less pain when they're sick. But if someone uses too much, it can make them very sleepy or even cause them to feel groggy the next day, like waking up from a long nap and still feeling tired.
Opium has been used for a long time, just like how we've always used blankets to help us rest.
