A nib is like the tip of a pen that lets you write on paper.
Imagine you have a pencil, when you sharpen it, you get a pointy end. That pointy end is like a nib, but for a fountain pen. A nib is made of metal and helps the ink flow from inside the pen to your paper so you can draw or write.
How It Works
When you press the nib against the paper, it makes a tiny space between the nib and the paper. That little space lets the ink come out and spread across the paper like water in a puddle.
Different Kinds of Nibs
Some nibs are wide, like a big toothbrush, they make thick lines. Others are narrow, like a thin straw, they make thin lines. You can even get nibs that look like little feathers, and they give your writing a special feel, almost like you're drawing with soft hair.
You might not notice it, but every time you write with a fountain pen, the nib is doing its job right there on your paper!
