What is Negotiation?

Negotiation is when people talk and decide to make something better for everyone involved.

Imagine you and your friend both want the same toy at the store. Instead of arguing or getting upset, you sit down and chat about it, maybe you agree to take turns playing with the toy, or one of you offers a trade, like giving up their favorite candy in exchange for the toy. That’s negotiation!

Like Sharing Your Snack

Think of it like sharing your snack at lunchtime. You have cookies, and your friend has juice. Neither of you wants to give up what they have, but if you talk about it, maybe you can trade: you get some juice, and they get a cookie. That’s how negotiation works, you both leave happy because you found a way that works for both of you.

When You Can’t Agree at First

Sometimes people don’t agree right away, just like when you and your friend argue about whose turn it is to play with the toy first. But if you keep talking and trying different ideas, maybe even offering something extra, eventually you’ll find a solution that makes both of you smile.

Negotiation isn’t magic, it’s just good talking and smart thinking!
