Mummified means something has been dried out and kept safe so it doesn’t rot.
Imagine you have a favorite sandwich, like peanut butter and jelly. If you leave it on the counter for too long, it gets squishy and yucky. That’s what happens to things when they rot.
But if you put that sandwich in the fridge or freezer, it stays good for longer. Something similar happened to ancient people and animals, they were mummified so their bodies stayed strong and didn’t fall apart.
How mummification works
In places like Egypt, people would take out all the insides of a body and dry it with special salts. It was kind of like wrapping up a wet towel in a sunny room, the moisture goes away, and the body stays strong.
You can think of it as putting your sandwich in the freezer instead of leaving it on the table. The mummified body is like that frozen sandwich, it’s not going to rot anytime soon!
