How do we know something is moving?
Think about riding a bike. At first, you're standing still, but when you start pedaling, you begin to move forward. The ground under your feet seems to go backward, that’s because you are changing place compared to the things around you.
Movement can be fast or slow
If you run across the room, you’re moving quickly. If you walk slowly, like a sleepy turtle, you’re moving more gently. Either way, you're still changing place, just at different speeds, like when you go from one end of the playground to the other! What is moving? is about things changing place, just like when you slide from one seat to another at the dinner table.
Imagine your favorite toy car sitting on the floor. When you push it, it starts to roll across the room. That’s movement, the car was in one spot, and now it's somewhere else!
Examples
- A ball rolling down a hill because it's pushed by gravity
- Pushing a shopping cart makes it move forward
- A car moves when the engine applies force to the wheels
