Montesquieu was a clever thinker who helped create the idea that government should be divided into parts so no one part has too much power.
Imagine you're playing with your friends in a big game, and there's only one person who decides all the rules. That person could be unfair or make bad choices because they have all the control. Now imagine if the game had three different people, one who makes the rules, one who helps enforce them, and one who keeps an eye on everything to keep things fair. That’s kind of what Montesquieu thought should happen in government.
Like a Team with Different Jobs
Think about it like a school team:
- One person is the leader, who makes decisions, like your class president.
- Another person helps carry out those decisions, like your teacher.
- A third person checks that everything is done fairly, like a referee in sports.
This way, no one person can mess things up too much because everyone has their own job to do. That’s the separation of powers Montesquieu talked about!
Examples
- A kid in ancient Rome who thought the best way to run a country was with three groups working together: laws, people, and leaders.
