What is monoterpene?

A monoterpene is like a tiny building block that nature uses to make scents and flavors we know and love.

Monoterpenes are found in many plants, like pine trees and oranges. When you peel an orange, the fresh, zesty smell that comes out is partly because of a monoterpene called limonene. It’s like the special ingredient that makes the orange smell like an orange.

In the forest, when you crush a pine needle between your fingers, you get that strong, woody scent, that's from another kind of monoterpene called pinene. So whether it's the smell of oranges or the fresh air in the woods, monoterpene is there, working like a tiny LEGO block to make big, wonderful scents!
