What is meiosis?

Meiosis is like when special cells get ready to make new people or animals by sharing their stuff.

Imagine you have a toy box full of blocks. You want to share your blocks with a friend, but instead of just giving them all the blocks at once, you split your blocks into two smaller sets, one for you and one for your friend. That way, both of you can still make cool things with your own set of blocks.

Meiosis is kind of like that toy box example, but with cells instead of blocks. When a cell goes through meiosis, it divides twice to create four new cells, each with only half the stuff from the original cell. These new cells are special because they can join together later to make a whole new person or animal.

How Meiosis Helps Make New People

When you're born, your body starts with one cell that has all the information needed to grow into you. This cell splits many times, some of those splits are regular, but others are special, like meiosis. The special splits happen in the cells that make eggs and sperm. When an egg meets a sperm later on, they join together to start making a new person.

So meiosis is like giving half your toy blocks to someone else so you can both have fun building something new, just with cells instead of toys!
