What Is Mechanical Stress?

Mechanical stress is what happens inside something when you push or pull on it, like when you squish a toy or stretch an elastic band.

Imagine you have a super strong gummy worm. When you捏它 (squish it), it feels pressure from all sides. That’s kind of like mechanical stress, the force that makes things change shape or size.

What It Feels Like

If you take a rubber band and stretch it between your fingers, you can feel how it resists being pulled apart. That resistance is because of stress working inside the rubber band. The more you pull, the more stress builds up, just like when you try to bend a paperclip too many times and it breaks.

What It Does

Stress isn’t always bad. When you press on something gently, it can help it stay strong. But if there's too much stress, things might break or twist in unexpected ways, like when your favorite soda bottle cracks because you squeezed it too hard!

So remember: mechanical stress is the invisible force inside materials that makes them stretch, shrink, bend, or even crack, just like your toys and snacks!
