What is majority?

A majority is when more than half of a group chooses the same thing.

Imagine you and your friends are picking a game to play at recess. There are 10 kids in total, including you. If 6 of you want to play tag, and only 4 want to play hide-and-seek, then tag is the majority choice, because more than half (which would be 5) picked it.

Like Sharing Cookies

Think about sharing cookies with your siblings. If there are 6 cookies and 3 kids, each kid gets 2 cookies, that's equal sharing. But if you have 7 cookies and 3 kids, two of you get 2 cookies, and one of you gets 3. The person who got 3 has a majority of the cookies in this little group.

Why It Matters

A majority helps decide things quickly, like which game to play or who gets more cookies. It doesn’t always mean everyone agrees, but it means most people do, and that’s enough to make a choice!
