What is luminescence?

Luminescence is when things glow without being touched by fire.

Imagine you have a nightlight in your bedroom, it glows softly even though no one has turned on the lights. That’s kind of like luminescence. Some things, like glow-in-the-dark stickers or certain kinds of stars, give off light all by themselves, not because they’re hot or burning.

When something is shaken up, maybe by light, heat, or even electricity, it can start glowing. Think about a glow stick: you bend it and snap, and suddenly it glows. That’s luminescence in action!

Some materials are like little light machines inside. When they get excited, maybe from being hit with light, their tiny parts start dancing, and that dance makes them glow.
