Level 1 on the Kardashev Scale is when a civilization can use all the energy from its own planet, like Earth.
Imagine you're playing with your toys in your room, and all the lights, the TV, and even your robot vacuum are powered by one big battery, that’s your whole house. Now imagine if your whole planet was like that room, and you had a super-duper battery that could power everything on it, that's what Level 1 is like!
How It Works
Think of Earth as the big battery. A Level 1 civilization can use all the energy from the sun that hits our planet, or even harness energy from inside the Earth, like geothermal power.
It’s like having a giant toy factory that runs on all your toys’ batteries at once, instead of just one.
What It Means
Right now, we’re working toward Level 1. We use energy from the sun, wind, water, and even underground heat, all parts of Earth. If we get really good at using all these powers together, we could be Level 1!
That means we'd be able to power everything on our planet, just like a room full of toys powered by one big battery.
Examples
- A Level 1 civilization can harness all the energy of its planet, like humans using electricity and fossil fuels.
- Humans are currently a Level 1 civilization because we use most of Earth's energy.
- If we started using renewable energy on a large scale, we might still be considered Level 1.
