What is kilonova?

A kilonova is like a giant firecracker explosion that happens when two super-dense stars crash into each other.

Imagine you have two heavy toy trucks, they're not just big, they’re super heavy, like the heaviest ones in the whole playground. Now imagine they zoom toward each other really fast and then smash together with a huge bang! That’s kind of what happens in a kilonova.

What makes it special

These stars are called neutron stars, and they're like the toughest, most packed-up balls of matter you can imagine, think of them as tiny, super-heavy marbles. When they collide, they send out a bright flash of light across space, sometimes even brighter than a supernova.

Why it matters

This explosion is so powerful that it can create new elements, like gold and platinum! So every time a kilonova happens, it’s like the universe is making a little treasure chest full of shiny stuff. And we get to find out about it by looking at the stars, just like you might look for pieces of confetti after a big party!
