Jean-François Champollion was a brilliant detective who solved a big puzzle, one that had been unsolved for almost 2,000 years!
Imagine you found a secret message written in a language no one understands. That’s what happened with the ancient Egyptian writing, called hieroglyphs. People couldn’t read them, and they didn’t know what they meant.
Like a Puzzle Box
Champollion was like a puzzle box solver, he looked at clues and connected them to find the answer. He used old books, rocks with writing on them, and even a special kind of dictionary called the Rosetta Stone. This stone had the same message written in three languages: ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The Big Breakthrough
One day, Champollion realized that some symbols were actually letters, just like the ones we use today! He used this discovery to figure out how to read hieroglyphs, opening up a whole new world of ancient stories and history.
He wasn’t just reading ancient words, he was bringing lost voices from the past into our present.
