What is iron?

Iron is a strong metal that we use to make things like cars, bikes, and even toys.

Imagine you have a big, heavy brick in your hand, that's kind of what iron feels like. But instead of being hard and rough, it’s smooth and can be shaped into different forms. If you hit it with a hammer, it doesn’t break easily; it just bends or gets dented.

Iron is hiding inside the ground in places we call ores. To get it out, miners dig deep underground and use big machines to crush rocks and separate the iron from other stuff.

People have been using iron for thousands of years because it's strong and can be made into tools, weapons, and even buildings. When you ride a bike or play with a toy car, you're probably touching something that was once iron!
