What is insulin?

Insulin is like a key that helps your body unlock and use sugar from food.

Imagine you just ate a big bowl of cereal, that’s full of sugar, which is like the fuel for your body’s little machines (your cells). But those machines can’t open the door to let in the sugar unless they have the right key. That’s where insulin comes in, it’s the key that helps them open up and take in the sugar so they can use it for energy.

How Insulin Works

When you eat, your blood gets a little "sweet" from all that sugar. Your body notices this and sends out insulin to help carry the sugar into your cells. It’s like a helpful friend who says, “Hey, I’ll show you how to get in, let’s go!”

If there's not enough insulin or if it doesn’t work right, the sugar can't get into the cells easily, and that can cause problems later on. But for now, think of insulin as your body’s friendly helper with a key who makes sure everyone gets their fuel!
