What is individualism?

Individualism is when people choose what they want to do and how they want to live, mostly on their own.

Imagine you're at a theme park with your friends. Some of them all run to the roller coaster together, but you pick a different path, maybe you go to the candy store first, or sit quietly on a bench reading a book. That’s individualism: choosing what you want, even if others are doing something else.

Choosing Your Own Way

In a group, like a class or a team, everyone might follow the same rule or do the same thing, but with individualism, you get to decide for yourself. It's like having your own favorite snack at lunch: while some people pick pizza, you might choose fruit or a cookie.

Being Yourself

Sometimes, being individual means standing out, not because you’re different, but because you're making choices that fit you. You don’t have to be the same as everyone else to be part of the group. It’s like wearing your favorite shirt to school even if all your friends are wearing the same one.

Individualism is about freedom and choice, it's being you, in a world full of other people doing their thing.
