What is immaterial?

Immaterial is something you can't touch or see, but it still has a big effect on the world around you.

Imagine you have a balloon. When you blow it up, it gets bigger and rounder. But what makes it get bigger? Air, that’s what we call immaterial in this case. You can’t really see the air inside the balloon, but without it, the balloon would be flat like a pancake.

Think of happiness, or even sadness. They're not things you can grab or taste, they’re feelings. But when you feel happy, your face lights up and you might laugh out loud! When you're sad, you might slouch and hide under a blanket. So even though happiness is immaterial, it changes how you act.

Another way to think about immaterial things is like sound. You can’t see music, but when your favorite song plays, it makes you dance or sing along. The sound waves are invisible, they're immaterial, but they still make a big difference in how you feel.

So even though immaterial things aren't real to touch, they’re all around us and help shape our world!
