What is Hertz (Hz)?

Hertz (Hz) is how we count how fast something happens, like a heartbeat or a bouncing ball.

Imagine you have a favorite toy that goes bop-bop-bop every second, like a little drummer. If it bops once every second, that’s 1 Hertz. If it bops twice as fast, bop-bop-bop-bop, that’s 2 Hertz. It's just counting how many times something happens in one second!

Like a Bouncing Ball

Think of a ball that goes up and down, like when you jump on a trampoline. If it bounces once every second, that’s 1 Hz. If it bounces faster, say 5 times in one second, that's 5 Hertz! It's like the ball is saying, "I'm really excited!" with each bounce.

Or Like Your Favorite Song

Your favorite song might have a beat you tap your foot to. If the beat goes thump-thump-thump once every second, that’s 1 Hz. If it goes faster, like when the music gets exciting, that's more Hertz!

So, Hertz is just a fancy way of saying "how many times something happens in one second." And you already know what that feels like! Hertz (Hz) is how we count how fast something happens, like a heartbeat or a bouncing ball.
