What is grassland?

Grassland is a big area covered mostly by grass, not trees or rocks.

Imagine you're playing on a huge, flat field after a rain, that’s like a grassland! It's where lots of animals live, like cows, bison, and even some birds. The ground is usually soft under your feet, kind of like when you walk on a park path after it rains.

If you look at a grassland from above, maybe in a plane or from the top of a hill, it looks like a big green blanket. This blanket is made up of many tiny plants called grass, growing close together. Sometimes, when the wind blows, the grass moves, and it looks like waves in the ocean.

In some places, people raise animals like sheep or cows on grasslands because the grass gives them food. It’s also a home for many wild animals, they eat the grass, or they hide under it when they're playing or resting.

Sometimes, when it rains a lot, the ground can get wet and muddy, just like after you play in the puddles outside!
