What is gout?

Gout is when your body has too much pain and swelling in a joint because of something called uric acid.

Imagine you have a glass of soda, it's fizzy, full of bubbles. Now imagine that soda is inside your body, and instead of bubbles, it’s full of tiny crystals made of uric acid. When there are too many of these crystals, they get stuck in your joints, like marbles rolling around in a ball pit, ouch!

What Causes Gout?

Gout happens when your body makes too much uric acid or can’t get rid of it properly.

Think of your body as a factory that makes soda. Sometimes the factory makes more soda than it should, or the bottles are clogged and don’t let the soda out. That’s like having gout, the extra soda (uric acid) turns into crystals and causes pain in your joints.

What Does Gout Feel Like?

When you have a gout attack, your joint feels like it's on fire, and it might look red and swollen. It usually starts in your big toe, but it can happen anywhere, like your knee or finger!

So remember: gout is like having too much soda inside your body that turns into crystals and causes pain, just like when you drink too many fizzy drinks and feel uncomfortable!
