What is GFR?

Think of your kidneys as tiny, hardworking filters that clean your blood. GFR stands for Glomerular Filtration Rate. It is simply a number that tells doctors how well those filters are doing their job.

How the Filter Works

Imagine your kidneys are like a coffee filter sitting under a pot. When you pour hot water and coffee grounds into the filter, clear liquid drips out into the pot below. The grounds stay inside. Your kidneys do the same thing. They take your blood, wash it, and send the clean part back to your body while sending waste away in your pee.

Why the Number Matters

The GFR counts how much clean blood your kidneys can wash in one minute. Doctors use this number to see if your filters are clogged or working well.

GFR LevelWhat it means
High numberYour filters are open and cleaning fast
Low numberYour filters might be getting clogged

If the number drops too low, it means waste is building up in your body. Doctors check this number during regular visits. It helps them catch problems early. Think of it like checking the oil light on a car dashboard. A good GFR keeps your body running smoothly.
