What is geosmin?

Geosmin is a special smell that some tiny creatures make when they live underground.

Imagine you have a big jar full of soil, and inside it are lots of little bugs called amoebae. These amoebae love to eat other tiny bugs. When they finish eating them, they sometimes get really happy and make a special smell, that’s geosmin! It's like when you finish your favorite snack and feel super excited.

This special smell can travel up through the ground and into the air. That’s why sometimes, after it rains, you might notice a fresh, earthy smell, like someone just turned on a little underground perfume machine!

Why We Notice It

Sometimes, when we go to the beach or walk in the forest right after rain, we can smell geosmin. It's not magic; it’s just these tiny bugs doing their happy dance under our feet and letting us know they're there, through smell!
