What is Galaxy evolution?

Galaxy evolution is like watching a city grow from a small village into a huge metropolis over many years.

Galaxies are big groups of stars, gas, and dust, kind of like cities made of light. Evolution means how things change and grow as time goes on. So galaxy evolution is just watching these star-cities change and get bigger, more interesting, and sometimes even more chaotic over billions of years.

Like a Growing City

Imagine you have a tiny village with only a few houses. Over time, more people move in, new homes are built, roads are added, and eventually the village becomes a big city with skyscrapers, traffic lights, and maybe even a subway system. That’s like how galaxies grow, they start small, then pull in more stars and gas, getting bigger and more complex.

Some Galaxies Merge

Sometimes, two cities decide to join forces, they become one big metropolis. Galaxies do the same thing! When two galaxies get close enough, they begin to pull each other in, eventually merging into a single, larger galaxy. This can be like a big party where two villages come together and create something even more amazing.

  2. Stars are born in galaxies when gas clouds collapse under their own gravity.
  3. Galaxies can look very different depending on how old they are.
