What is further?

"Further" is just a fancy word for away from here.

Think of your favorite toy. If it is in your hand, it is close. If you throw it across the room, it is further away. The toy did not change, but the distance did. "Further" describes how many steps you need to take to reach something.

Measuring Distance

Imagine you are playing hide and seek. If your friend hides behind the couch, you only need one step. If they hide in the backyard, you need many steps. The backyard is further than the couch.

We can use simple comparisons:

DistanceExample
CloseYour shoes are right by your feet
FurtherThe park is ten blocks away

"Further" is not about time, though. It is about space. If you live in New York and your cousin lives in London, London is further away. You cannot touch London from New York, but you can touch your shoes.

Think of a rope. The longer the rope, the further the other end is from you.

So, "further" simply means more distance. It is the opposite of "closer". If you walk away from your mom, you are moving further. If you walk toward her, you are moving closer.
