The First Opium War was a big fight between two countries because one wanted to sell something special that made people really happy.
China had lots of money and power, but Britain wanted to trade with them using opium, which is like a strong medicine or candy that makes people feel good, but too much can make them sleepy or sick.
The Opium Trade
Imagine you have your favorite snack, and someone keeps bringing in a new snack from another country. At first, it's fun, but soon they want to trade only with their snack. That’s what happened: Britain was sending opium into China, and people were buying it instead of using silver coins, which China used for trading.
The War Starts
China got tired of this and said, "We're going to stop this!" So they threw all the opium into the sea, like throwing away your old toys. Britain didn’t like that, so they sent their ships to fight back in a big battle near China.
After a few years of fighting, Britain won, and they made a deal with China: China had to let Britain trade more freely, and also pay them money for the opium. That’s why we call it the First Opium War.
Examples
