What is federalism?

Federalism is when a country is run by two groups working together, one big group and one smaller group.

Imagine you have a big toy box full of all your favorite toys, and you also have a small toy box with just your favorite five toys. You’re the big group, and your favorite five toys are the smaller group. The big group makes the rules for everyone in the whole room, but the smaller group gets to make some special rules just for them, like how they play with their toys.

Like Sharing a Room

Federalism is kind of like sharing a bedroom with your sibling. You both live in the same house (the country), but you each have your own space and can make your own rules (like who gets to use the bigger bed or who has to clean up first). The whole house still follows some rules, like when dinner is served, that’s like the national government. But you and your sibling can also decide on your own bedroom rules, that’s like the state or local governments.

Federalism helps balance things out, it lets everyone have a say in how they live together! Federalism is when a country is run by two groups working together, one big group and one smaller group.
